Anodizing

ANODIZATION

Anodizing is the process of making an oxide film over certain metals by immersion in an electrolytic bath in which the metal to be anodized is connected to the positive pole of an electricity source, becoming the anode of the electrolytic tank. Certain metals - aluminum, niobium, tantalum, titanium, tungsten, zirconium - have characteristic results of oxide layer formation.

Other metals can be used as an anodes in electrolytic baths to obtain specific surface treatments, but the growth of an oxide layer as described here is characteristic of the metals mentioned. The anodizing of metal alloys depends a lot on its composition, for example, aluminum alloys for foundry have a lot of silicon, which gives fluidity for the good filling of the molds, but makes the part almost impossible to anodize.
