Black oxidation is a passivation coating process for ferrous materials, copper and copper alloys, zinc, synthesized metals and silver solder. It is used to prevent corrosion in less demanding situations and to improve the visual aspect. It is quite usual to impregnate the oxide layer with oil, wax or varnish, to improve corrosion resistance. The great advantages of this type of coating are the small layer thickness and the low cost.
